How to Make Peanut Sauce

Looking for a new sauce in your cooking repertoire? How about trying this new peanut sauce? It is called Peanut-Tamarind Dipping Sauce and it is very simple to make and is very delicious. This peanut sauce is great as a dipping sauce for spring rolls or as a marinade and dip for satay. The secret to this amazing sauce is the Thai curry paste which can easily be picked up at the store.

Mortar and Pestle or Food Processor

It is recommended that you use a mortar and pestle for this peanut sauce because it will get the most flavor out of the peanuts and garlic. If you do not have one, you can also use a food processor.

Ingredients for Peanut-Tamarind Dipping Sauce

Dry chili flakes, to taste (optional)

1/2 cup shelled peanuts (3 ounces; 85g)

3 medium cloves garlic

1 tablespoon palm or light brown sugar (1/2 ounce; 15g)

2 tablespoons (30ml) vegan Thai red or curry paste

2 tablespoons (30ml) light soy sauce

2 tablespoons (30ml) vegetable oil

1 tablespoon (15ml) tamarind concentrate


Begin by toasting the peanuts in a rimmed baking sheet at 375°F for 5 minutes until they turn golden brown. After that, transfer them to a cool plate. If you have a mortar and pestle, use it to combine sugar and garlic into a smooth paste. Next, incorporate the peanuts and continue pounding to create a chunky paste. If you are using a food processor, mix up the peanuts sugar and garlic until the paste is formed. The next step is adding the soy sauce, curry paste and tamarind concentrate. You want to firmly stir or pulse the mixture until the ingredients come together.  Then, you want to add the vegetable oil and stir to combine. From there you can slowly incorporate water to make the sauce a thinner consistency. If you want your sauce to be spicier you can add in some chili flakes.
