Good Morning to You: Authentic Korean Breakfast Favorites

Breakfast time all over the world, oddly enough, at different times of the day.

Breakfast time all over the world, oddly enough, at different times of the day. This happenstance is due to the existence of time zones. Such a weird notion, surely, didn’t exist. At least not when centuries-old cuisines were taking shape. Korean food and breakfast foods bear an uncanny resemblance to their counterparts in China, Taiwan, Japan, and beyond. Let’s find out more about these yummy options you can start your morning with besides the same-old platter of bacon, eggs, and toast!

The Korean-Style Fully Loaded Breakfast

Unlike other meals spaced out throughout the day, Korean breakfasts are not as heavy. For one thing, there are not as many side dishes (banchan) included. Rice is, of course, still the main staple. Soups and stews are also common, depending on the weather. You might have heard of how a full English, Irish, Scottish, or Welsh brekky comes together. Like its European counterparts, meats, veggies, and starches are part of the proceedings. Galbi, spicy seaweed salad, bean sprout rice, cucumber soup, and seasoned kelp are particularly popular items.

An Unconventional Mix of Eggs and Tofu

You might not think that eggs and tofu would make a good pairing. Korean breakfast arrangements, though, would tell you otherwise. Vegetable omelets and tofu dressed with well-seasoned soy sauce are the stars of the show. The rice accompanying these tasty dishes is cooked using a combination of red and black beans. Radish kimchi is included, and then everything is topped with a fiery Korean coleslaw.

That Unique Egg Toast Street Vendor Sandwich

Breakfast sandwiches are common all over the world. Some of the most popular wrappings for such a sandwich are bagels, bread, and tortillas. However, the breakfast sandwich served by Korean street vendors is on another level. Tost-u (toast) and gaeran tost-u (egg toast) feature cabbage and brown sugar as unusual toppings that you wouldn’t see in America.

The Dish That Combines Fruit, Bread, and Eggs

Okay, we agree that fruit, bread, and eggs are typical ingredients in a so-called continental breakfast. Even so, the Korean take on this easy-to-digest menu selection does it in a different yet still mouthwatering way. Unlike the other dishes mentioned above, this one is patterned after Western-style breakfasts. Fried eggs, fresh fruit, and Japanese-style white bread are the main attractions here. Korean bakeries are revered for the breakfast-time items they sell. Strawberry butter is another touch you can’t shy away from just because it doesn’t seem appetizing. But if you would prefer cereal, bread, or pastries instead, you can enjoy those as well.
