Fried Rice 

Fried rice is one of the most popular dishes around the world, and for good reason! It’s incredibly versatile and can be mixed with a wide variety of proteins, veggies, and toppings. Try chicken, beef, seafood, or vegetables – all are delicious! The fried rice you find in Indonesia is different from its cousins in other Asian countries, though. For instance, it uses a sweet and thick soy sauce called kecap. Then it is garnished with acar, pickled cucumbers, and carrots. Known as Nasi Goreng in Indonesian, it is considered to be the country’s national dish. 

Nasi Rawon 

This beef stew hails from East Java. it has a scrumptiously nutty flavor and owes its deep black color to the inclusion of keluak nut. It’s rich and hearty and is best served with a bowl of rice.  

Sop Buntut 

As you might guess from the name, this dish is a type of soup. You would be correct – it’s oxtail soup! It’s healthy, hearty, and beloved all over Indonesia. The oxtail is typically fried or barbecued before being added to a broth-like soup base. 

Siomay 

Do you know what shumai is? If so, then you might notice the cognate term used here. However, this dish is an example of Indonesia’s take on dim sum. Steamed fish dumplings are combined with steamed potatoes, cabbage, egg, and then slathered with peanut sauce. It’s one of the finest examples of street food you will find anywhere in Indonesia. 

Indomie
