Be part of Breast Cancer Awareness Month with these delicious cancer fighting superfoods.

The National Breast Cancer Foundation recognizes October as Breast Cancer Awareness Month, an annual campaign help increase awareness of the disease. Our dietary choices can make a huge impact on the potential risk of breast cancer and other similar diseases. So in homage of Breast Cancer Awareness month, we’ve put together a list of some of the top foods to help prevent breast cancer.

Broccoli – A compound in broccoli called sulforaphane has been shown to reduce the number of breast cancer cells in mice, according to one research study from University of Michigan. To get the most broccoli in your diet you can eat it raw, steamed, or stir-fried. Avoid boiling as that will destroy the good nutrients like sulforaphane.

Salmon – The omega-3 fats in fish oil can reduce inflammation that contributes to breast cancer. Skip the supplements, as eating about 8 ounces of oily fish a week will suffice.

Beans – The American Journal of Clinical Nutrition says that upping your fiber game may help reduce your risk of breast cancer. Research suggests that for every 10 grams of fiber a woman adds to her daily diet, her chances of breast cancer decrease by about 7 percent. That’s about ½ cup of beans each day, depending on the variety.

Plums & Peaches – Plums and peaches are superfoods rich in antioxidants that may help kill breast cancer cells while leaving healthy cells alone. That makes this one of the easier, tastier ways to fight breast cancer.

Walnuts – Experts believe that the anti-inflammatory properties of the omega-3 fat alpha-linolenic acid found in walnuts have great tumor-fighting potential.

Olive oil – Researchers in Barcelona gave rats with breast cancer a diet predominantly involving extra-virgin olive oil, and found that the oil’s antioxidants and oleic acid helped quell the growth of malignant cells.

Coffee – Coffee’s antioxidants can protect cells from damage that may lead to cancer. More research is needed, but it’s good to know if you’re already a coffee fanatic.
